Dutch Carnival

Each year, in the three days leading up to Lent, cities and towns across the south of the Netherlands erupt into vibrant celebration. Many adopt new names—Den Bosch becomes Oeteldonk, for example—and each community brings its own colorful customs to life.

The streets overflow with revelers in elaborate fancy dress, parades, lively bands, and an undeniable spirit of joy—and, of course, plenty of drinking.

In March 2025, I captured hundreds of moments across Den Bosch, Breda, Eindhoven, Tilburg, and Maastricht. This selection offers a glimpse into the unrestrained energy and unique traditions of these unforgettable celebrations.
